Snow Learning Day Information

Hi Families!

In the event that we have a "Snow Learning Day" tomorrow, I wanted to let you know the specifics of that and what it means for 1D! The Superintendent will make the call if the weather permits it. If there are power outages that interfere with our technology use, Dr. Ryan will specify that and we weill go from a "Snow Learning Day" to a school cancellation. Here are the specifics of Snow Learning Days!

I wanted to follow up with you about our Snow Learning Day plan for this year. We  were told that when inclement weather takes place and has many people home (working family members, small children, school aged children, as well as teachers with similar situations) we are to adjust our day to a Snow Learning Day that is consistent with our SAU and what the rest of our school is doing. The idea is to make it a manageable day for all who are involved. With that being said, I wanted to lay out our day for you. We are required to have a morning meeting, one hour of interactive learning time, independent asynchronous work which includes related arts for that day, and an afternoon meeting. This means our day will adjust, but not by too much! If your child finishes their asynchronous work, I encourage you to have them get out in the snow and enjoy the beautiful perks of being a New Englander!  If you want to try and keep the day consistent for your child, I suggest you follow this schedule below.

9:15-9:30

 Morning Meeting (Zoom)

9:30-10:30

 Class learning time (Zoom)

10:30

Asynchronous Work Begins (in any order)

-Related Arts Seesaw Activity

-Two class activities on Seesaw

-15 minutes of independent reading

-15 minutes of typing club

*lunch hour should be taken at any desired time*

Closing Meeting (Zoom)

I will be available by email during asynchronous work time if you have any questions!

Remote Update 11/17

 Hi Families!

Happy Tuesday! I hope your dragonfly is adjusting well to their second week in their new remote classroom. Last week, we took it slow and got to know one another. We practiced taking meaningful breaks, performing learning tasks, posting to Seesaw, and just getting used to a new environment, whether it was having a new teacher, or friends, or both! I understand that remote learning has its challenges and in many cases is not ideal but I would like to kindly express my gratitude toward all of you for being so understanding and flexible as we all adjust to this new way of learning. If you've been with me since September, thank you for being flexible as we slowed things down a bit last week for our new friends to adjust!

This week we have started some new units. We are entering an addition and subtraction strategy unit for math. We've started with decomposing numbers, fact families, and we will be learning some strategies to work through addition and subtraction problems. We will start with visual strategies and then make our way to the traditional methods that you and I grew up learning!
In reading, we are in a tricky word unit. We have talked about some bad habits that we all have done atleast once or twice in our reading! We are going to hold ourselves accountable to fixing these bad habits and replacing them with new ones! By doing this we are going to put some decoding strategies under our belt- starting tomorrow we will be learning some strategies to help us solve words and we will practice how we know when to use each one! On your child's Seesaw you will be able to see them using these strategies!
In writing, we are working on a "small moment" unit. This is writing about one memory and including many details. We started by drawing detailed pictures and doing a touch and tell to help us write and include all the details from that memory. As we've become stronger in the ideas we are writing about, now we are starting to look at our writing as editors. Students will be going back into their writing and holding themselves accountable for editing words that are missing sounds or adding words that may have been left out. Editing is a tricky concept for new writers but as we've worked through this together, the students have shown that rereading their writing and editing is certainly do-able even at their early stage of writing! We've also done some free writing to foster the joy of writing during this time!
In science we have been having science talks and inquiry. We are using questions from kids around the world through the resource of Mystery Doug to guide our own questioning of our world. Science talks allow us to think about the world around us, try to make sense of it, and realize that there is much more research to be done to figure out the amazing world around us. So far as a new classroom family we have looked at the questions of "What is at the bottom of the ocean?", "Why were emoji's created?" and "Where was the first candy invented?". We have come up with our own class wonders as well and will be researching those ideas all together.

Tomorrow at 12:00 if you would like to join myself and Mr. G for a zoom lunch, he will be available to answer tech questions! He can also help you set up the Coding Monsters App that we will be using on Fridays. If you can't join us for this lunch but have questions about technology, please email myself and Mr. G and we would be happy to assist you!

It sounds like our SEL sessions will most likely be held on Thursday afternoons. We are trying to offer transportation for families and I will let you know as soon as we get the approval for this new session of SEL days to begin! Please let me know if you plan on attending these sessions if you haven't done so already!

10/18/20

 Hi Families,

I hope you had a great weekend. I know you had some tough decisions to make for your child's school journey this weekend and I hope you are feeling confident in your decision and ready to move forward! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. The survey is asked to be completed by tomorrow deciding if your child is heading back to school or remaining remote.

This week we continue with in person assessments. Please review the google doc with the times and try your best to be punctual with arrival and pick up times, as we only have one hour for many assessments. These have been going great and I can't wait to see the rest of the dragonflies soon! I will meet you by the office doors! Our assessment days are Tuesday and Wednesday this week, while your child isn't getting assessed please use this time to complete the iReady assessment for math at home. Please read through the information I sent home about this assessment, it is very important!

Family conferences are on the half days of school which are 11/2 and 11/4. I will be sending out a google sign up doc for these days and a few other available times! Be on the look out for this to come to you this week! Your dragonfly should be present during part of the zoom and then we will save time for family questions. I can't wait to connect with you!

We will be recording oru favorite piece of writing on Seesaw tomorrow. On Tuesday and Wednesday morning we will be watching each other's stories on Seesaw. We will celebrate each other's work by enjoying popcorn or a small snack while viewing the clips! I am happy with any type of snack but understand there may be different rules for each family about snacks near technology. If you could chat with your child about what an appropriate snack for this time would be, that would be great! :)

Lastly, we have started conferring about personal goals during reading time. If your dragonfly hasn't had a one on one conference yet, they will soon! We are excited to dig deeper in our curriculum and learning more about ourselves as learners.

Important information for the week of 9/28/20

 Hi Families!  Happy Fall!

I wanted to let you know some important details for this upcoming week. On Thursday we will be gathering in person for a 90 minute SEL session! Our class is scheduled for Thursday from 12:30-2:00. I am hoping that all the dragonflies will be able to come and learn in person but I totally understand if schedules cause conflict or if families are hesitant to have their child join. Please let me know if you have any questions about this, I would be more than happy to chat with you!

We will be using Seesaw and following our schedule that was sent out at the beginning of the year for content this week. There will be nothing different on your end, just the shuffling of times that we do certain curriculum areas throughout the day within our current time frame. This will allow for support services to service students easier and for small groups to start happening as we dive into more intensive curriculum! If you child had any trouble logging into Seesaw please let me know, so I can get the tech department on it right away. We will be doing it together as a class this week so we will find out for certain if your child can log on easily, if you haven't already! :)

Clever is updated and has all of the related arts links on it to make it easier transitioning from our class zoom to related arts zooms. Please use the home page of clever to access those! The seesaw link is on there as well!

I am emailing a contact sheet for you if you are looking to schedule playdates or reach out to families in our classroom family, please let me know if you don't receive it tonight!

Learning Update! 9/21/20

 Hi Dragonfly Families!

I hope you are settling in as we continue our virtual learning. I am hopeful that we will be back together in the classroom but until then it has been so wonderful seeing the dragonflies every day with those big smiles. I've said it once, I'll say it a million times- I have offically hit the jackpot with this class!! They are working so hard and doing such a great job with our virtual learning. Their stamina of learning time and their eagerness to share with others through the screen absolutely blows me away.

I wanted to give you a quick update on our day to day learning and then give you a heads up as we head into sticking to our classroom schedule and introducing focus lessons- both live and from videos via seesaw.

As of now, our learning has been around community and building our relationships with our classmates. If you've been listening in or talking with your dragonfly at night, you may have noticed that we are focusing a lot on read alouds, exploring wonders, getting to know one another, completing short tasks, and discussing expecations for zoom and breaks. The students have done wonerful with this! Most of our independet work has been, drawing, writing, reading, or creative playing! We have gotten very good at sharing and listening to our friends as they share. As we continue into this week and next week I will be introducing more academic concepts, launching an identity iquiry, and slowly introducing math lessons. We will also be opening up our seesaw accounts at the end of the week! You will get extra information on this! Starting next week, I plan to stick to our classroom schedule that was sent out at the beginning of the year so that additional services can support our kiddos and know our shedules!

A classroom list with family contacts will be sent out soon. Feel free to use this for play dates or contacting other families!

I hope you have a great week and as always, please reach out if you have any questions!

have a good week

Welcome Families!

 Hi 2020-2021 Dragonfly Families!

I will be using this blog to house links, updates, schedules, and any other information for the school year! Please be sure to check it often or subscribe for notifications! This is a space to house information about our learning while Seesaw will be the vessel for our work during the day. Here is a visual schedule for our class! I will also be sending out a link with this schedule to your email that will also have the specific links for encore zooms! I will post the link for that schedule below as well.

Dear Families,

Welcome back! For all of you, this was probably one of the most unique summers on record. My summer was relaxing and slowed down, focusing on the things that matter most! I hope all of you had an active, exciting, and safe summer. We will be starting off our year a bit differently than we would have liked to but I am really looking forward to getting to know all of the students and all of you as parents/guardians. It’s going to be a great year (no matter how different it may look)! I am committed to providing your child with a connected community, challenging curriculum, social and emotional support system, and an exciting school year that closely resembles what our year would be like, had we been starting in our physical classroom. Together, we will move mountains and I want you to know how appreciated you are. !

This letter is designed to provide you with specific information pertaining to this particular class so please read carefully.

*Reminder from orientation* There are technology and classroom goodie bag pick up times today 9/8 from 1:00-4:00 and Wednesday 9/9 from 9:30-11:30. There is a supply goodie bag and technology for each dragonfly student.

Communication: In order to have a successful year, it is essential that any concerns and questions you have, are immediately brought to my attention. Anytime you have a problem, no matter how small, please call me at school, request a conference, or e-mail me at sdonlon@sau16.org. Email will be the quickest way for me to respond, but the communication form that works best for you works for me!

Mrs. Saxton: The Dragonfly Class is SO fortunate to be supported by Kim Saxton this year! She will be joining us each day for our Zoom sessions, as well as supporting students in small group and 1:1 settings.

Class Blog: I will work hard each week to keep up-to-date with a classroom blog. Our class page can be found  using this link: https://smsdragonflies.blogspot.com/. Please bookmark this page as I will post important information, pertinent to our class, including schedules, assignments links, and academic newsletters. You can also subscribe on the right hand side but be sure to follow through with the email they send you from “feedburner” to fully subscribe to getting notifications. This email can sometimes go to spam! There is a link to our class page from the SMS school page.

Seesaw: Seesaw will be your child’s way to connect to our classroom.  Everyday your child will log into Seesaw to read the morning message or see a video of me, find any daily news, lessons and assignments.  You can access Seesaw from a web browser or the app on a mobile device.  There are TWO apps (you need both).  Your child will access the “CLASS” app to complete their work and you will access the “FAMILY” app to view their completed assignments in their student portfolio.  Personalized logins and instructions will be emailed to you soon.

Zoom Link: We will be using the same zoom link (and only one link!) each day. Students will be able to easily access this link from our class website, but I have also copied the invitation below for your convenience. Your child will be accessing this link throughout our school day, in each subject area. You may find it beneficial to have your child stay “in” the Zoom session for the entire day and just turn the audio and video off when they are engaging in independent practice. Hopefully it is easy enough, however,  that they can jump in and out of Zoom if they would prefer. Managing multiple Zoom meetings a day will be something we work on throughout the year.

Schedule: A schedule will be sent out to you today for what our anticipated day weeks will look like. As you review the schedule, I ask for your permission to be flexible and understanding as the schedule will likely need to be modified after the year is underway. While the basic framework will remain, we may need to tweak some components to best accommodate our learners (which of course we won’t know until we give it a try!).  For example, the first 6 weeks of school will have a primary focus on building classroom community, practicing routines and procedures, and building stamina for remote learning, so the timing of activities may vary. Thank you for your patience, and I welcome feedback as the year progresses. Per the SAU expectations, you can expect for your child to be engaged in learning from 9:10-2:15PM each day. Throughout the school day, your child will receive multiple opportunities for live instruction.

Attendance: Per school and districtwide directive, it is expected that your child will participate in daily class assignments and Zoom meetings. Attendance will be taken in the morning and after lunch.

Related Arts: 1D will receive instruction from their related arts teachers daily from 10:25-10:55. I will attach the zoom link here! They will also be in our schedule for our easy access. 1D will follow this schedule:

Monday - Library with Mrs. O’Connor- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5406939107?pwd=bkFZRXI0dUhvZTV0Sk1GUS96OHdudz09

Tuesday - PE with Mrs. Locke- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5792254221?pwd=eStzZEE3V0ZtYkhDTGhuTjZ3ZWxvQT09

Wednesday - Art with Mrs. Dow- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2310474610?pwd=ZTJSSVNzaG83R0taT2NZTmRhak9RQT09

Thursday - PE with Mrs. Bachelder- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9900045988?pwd=WmYzSVN3N2tNM0ppZ1JUVGF3TlE3Zz09

Friday - Music with Ms. Curtis- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2121681035?pwd=NWx4bG9hbXJETnZLdW9XM2prY3k4QT09

At Home Learning Environment: Please work with your child to designate an “at-home” learning space. This should be a space with a hard surface (like a desk or table), a sturdy, comfortable chair, and access to technology (preferably where their device can easily access a charger). It would be helpful if students had paper (lined and blank), a notebook, writing utensils, a small dry erase board with markers, and headphones available. A supply bag will be available with technology pick up for each student before the start of school and will have most of these materials!  If you have any difficulty obtaining any necessary supplies, please don’t hesitate to reach out, as I imagine we will be flying through them!. We have plenty of available resources at the school and I am happy to get them to you. Additionally, to help promote a daily, school routine, please make sure your child gets dressed and eats breakfast before morning meeting each day.

Snack: Our snack time would typically be around 10:00 every day. While you will not find a scheduled snack break, I encourage your child to eat a healthy snack, mid-morning, to fuel their brain for learning. If possible, please have your child avoid having their snack during a live zoom session.

Soft Start: While our school day won’t officially begin until 9:10, I encourage your child to start their day in a way similar to what would have been provided in an in-person experience. As you may know, last year, first graders began their day with an outdoor recess. This may work at your home and could work to provide some activity and fresh air before the demands of remote learning beginning. On days when there was not an outdoor recess (due to weather or scheduling conflict), students were given an in class ‘quiet time’ to start their day. This could work to provide some unstructured time to play, create, build, or unwind. Whatever works best for you works for me, but I strongly encourage your child to have this soft start before our school day officially begins. After the first few weeks of school, my plan is to open our Zoom link beginning at 9:00, for students who would like to log in and “free chat” with their friends. I will, of course, be present, but will not begin our meeting until 9:10. This ten minute “free” time is optional.

Zoom Expectations: Our classroom runs using the responsive classroom approach (https://www.responsiveclassroom.org). As a class, we will work together at the beginning of the year to establish expected Zoom behaviors. We will draft a classroom contract that we will all sign. Through lots of positive, clear language, student behavior will be reinforced, reminded, or redirected. I continually find students are motivated to do well and be positive members of our classroom community.

Screen Time: As we will be spending much of our time accessing our learning through technology (although, I can assure you that I value a healthy balance of screen and non-screen activities in the remote setting), I encourage them to step away from the screen when school is not in session. Spending time engaged in unstructured play and out in the natural environment  is a critical piece of child development.

Classroom Contact List: As we are in the virtual classroom, many families may find it helpful to have access to a family class email list. This could be used to host virtual playdates (or potentially socially distant outdoor playdates!) or to communicate with other families. I will work on creating a class list over the first week of school. Please let me know, through email if possible, which email you would like on the classroom contact list!

Book Orders: Scholastic book orders will be available every month throughout the school year. The book orders can be paid by check or, more conveniently, online. I will send out ordering information when the first book order is available!

***I realize this is a TON of information so please take your time soaking it in and if you have any further questions about any of these areas or any not included in this newsletter, please contact me! Let the learning begin!!

Parade Tomorrow!

Hi Families
Due to the parade tomorrow and my hour commute to get there, there will be no morning zoom calls! I will upload two lessons to Seesaw for your child to complete at any point during the day!
If I do not drive by your house during the parade route, I will be doing brief pull in and beeps at your house afterward to say hi to each dragonfly that I have not seen! If you would not like a visit afterward, just let me know! I am excited to see everyone tomorrow! Have a great day! 🥳

Monday Morning Change of Schedule

Hi Families!
Due to an unexpected meeting I will not be able to have zoom lessons on Monday morning this week. Here is the schedule as usual, with that added detail! Mr. Evans is now offering social zooms on Monday afternoons. I will post the zoom link to the schedule as soon as he sends it to me! It will be on the schedule before those sessions tomorrow afternoon! I encourage your dragonfly to join in for some extra fun, especially since we won't be meeting tomorrow morning! Have a wonderful night!

Printable Ruler

Hi Families!
If your child doesn't have a ruler to use at home, you can google one for them to use and print it off. As long as they are using the ruler as a tool the correct way, it doesn't matter so much if the ruler is exactly the right size! This will be helpful for the rest of our unit. I found a link that seems good for a printable ruler but feel free to use another one if you need!

Phase 3 check in!🤓

Hi Families!
Now that we are in Phase 3, I wanted to reach out to everyone and make sure you know where to access our weekly schedule and a few other minor details. Our schedule will stay the same, with the exception of if your child is scheduled for an independent session, we will schedule those before the week starts, based on need! I will reach out to you about this, as I am looking to schedule everyone for an independent spot in the near future. If you have any questions on the schedule, please let me know! As you may have heard, the SAU has asked us to partake in a "flex" day on Fridays. This means there will be no meetings on Fridays now with students on zoom. I will still upload videos to Seesaw on this day! Here is the link if you ever need it!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XOYTyn68Z0mcbbq-E_A0_oH5MvCnFTqsOgSBTEiTpdQ/edit?usp=sharing

If you need a remote access code for Seesaw, please let me know! I see that so many of you are using it and just want to make sure that everyone has what they need for that! This is the same QR code that was sent home at the beginning of the year. I am happy to send you a new one if needed!

I hope you are having a great week so far!

Family/Teacher Conferences and Touching Base

Hi Families! I would love to find a time to connect with you to find out how things are going at home and discuss your child's progress from where we were in our year! I think it would be nice to use conference times to connect about learning at home! I understand this is an extremely busy time for you and that you have a ton on your plate. I think it's safe to say that none of us saw this coming and we would all like it to come to an end as soon as possible! It seems like you are doing amazing, although I know it is not easy. I'd love to have conversations and support you through the learning and talk about your child as a learner. To do this, I want to offer zoom as an option and phone calls as another option. I am completely fine with whichever you choose! I am hoping to chat with some of you this coming Friday and then leave my schedule open for the following Friday. I am available for conversations starting on Friday at 11:30. On Friday, April 10th I will be available all day for conferences. If you'd like to schedule a time with me please sign up on the google doc that I will be emailing to all families! If the times do not work for you, please let me know and we can find another time that does! I am excited to chat with you!

New Resources & Zoom Schedules

Hi Everyone!
A new weekly schedule was sent out by email with Zoom times and Facetime times. Please let me know if the times don't work for your schedule! I can't wait to start this week with the kiddos! I also want you to know that there have been new resources posted to the SMS wolf site in the first grade section!

I will send out zoom links ten minutes before the meetings! :)

Have a great Sunday night!

Update on learning from home!

Hi Everyone!
I wanted to give you an update on learning from home! We had a meeting today with admin and the first grade team is compiling more resources for you that we will be sent out by Friday. We are working on things as a team for you and your child to add to your learning from home, such as new bingo boards for reading, writing, math, tech, and outdoor learning! You'll most likely be getting an email from Mrs. Belanger with this information from the whole team! After talking with admin today we were reminded how important it is to pace ourselves and to work through things thoroughly. Working through tasks and using creativity can take more critical thinking than video watching so we are hoping to give you a variety of choices to do with your child. This is a huge learning curve for all of us and I appreicate you being flexible with facetime times and the roll out of plans.

As for our classroom family, here is my vision:
I will be trying to facetime each dragonfly once a week for an independent goal setting conference!
In addition, your dragonfly will have a weekly time for a small group video chat. Zoom will be how we are communicating and you will get an email from me with a time we are meeting and a link to bring you to the meeting! I am trying to work with everyone on times and respect that many of you are working from home, so please just let me know if the time does not work for you and we can easily putyour dragonfly into another group. Please download Zoom so your child is ready for their small group meeting! My vision for the zoom calls is to have the students connect with one another but still use our precious time for learning. We will work on vowel sounds, word work, sight word practice, and math to start. Please remind your child that this time is important for our learning and we need to be ready to learn at this time!
The youtube channel will be a place where you can find short activities for your child to do within your own schedule you created. These will always be available and between facetimes and meetings, I will be recording mini lessons there! I will be posting some things for them to try and some review of topics we need to keep fresh in our brains.

I would love for you to look into these resources, as they are currently resources I am very interested in using. They are engaging and worth the time!

Epic Login:
Go to https://www.getepic.com/students and enter the class code ild2956, after that click their name and you can start reading a lot of different books! Please let me know if you have any questions about Epic!

Raz Kids!
Raz kids accounts are great for leveled reading. Please have your child use this resource because it is a GREAT one! When you login you will need the teacher username which is sdonlon0. The student name is your child's first name only and the password is the fish icon and the turtle icon! I have put their reading level in and books should come up that are just right and a little easier for them to work on their fluency.

Please visit Scholasic at https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-1-2.html and they have it broken down by weeks of virtual field trips and great reading! I checked this out today and it's awesome!

Readworks.org
This is a resource I heard about from a fellow teacher. It is a reading resource where I can monitor student work and responses to reading. Please go to readworks.org/student and enter the class code. ZXR6Y6. The temporary password is 1234. I will be playing around with this resource and wanted to get it out to you as it seems like families are enjoying it!

Let me know if you have any questions with these resources and I hope you've had a great day!

Please Read: Update On School From Home

Hi Families!
Well, I never thought this would be an email I'm writing. As we enter these few weeks of working from home I want to remind you of a few resources that I sent home on Friday with your chilld. Each child has a bag of books that were chosen with them to be reading and practicing some skills in! There was a packet sent home with a letter from me on top and some additional resources within it. These bingo sheets are to provide your child with some options at home to keep engaging in their learning. I want you to know that none of this is required by the school but we highly recommend keeping your child enaged and practicing their math facts and any form or writing or reading.
I sent home wonder journals for students to continue writing in. These are a great resource for students to go back and edit their own writing or to make new entries. I encourage you to have our child write for atleast 20 minutes a day- we usualy write for an ahour! This can be as simple as them summarizing a movie they watched or making a journal about what they did to stretch their brain that day. I encourage you to set up a schedule for your child each day. On index cards write out different ideas for them to work on or practice or to break up their day and have them arrange it to work through their day independently. I will be making a tutorial video on this and think they would love it- if you want to have them try it out, I think it would be a great and easy way to start with some structure!

In addition to this, I will be making a Youtube channel to stay connected with the kids! I know they love youtubers and if I can stay connected with them through that and have them work on some extra things at home, I am excited to try! This could range from a check-in,  a mini lesson, or a challenge for them to try. If I'm being completely honest, I have NO idea where to start with this. I will be working to set this up today and will be positing daily links to the blog! Please help your child check the blog daily so they can see these videos!

I am hoping to create a facetiming schedule with the students. I know this would require an apple device or the use of an iphone and I am hopingto get your thoughts on this. It is a lot to coordinate for 18 schedules but I would love to have one on one conversations with your child to talk about personal goals and picking up where we left off at school, at home. If you are interested in working with me to create a schedule, please email me! This is not required but it is a way that I could individually connect with students and maintain the growth that we were seeing.

Lastly, I wanted to remind you that there are links on the side of this blog page that are fun resources for students to explore. I also wanted to suggest some differnt apps that you can download or purchase to engage student learning.

Chalkboard Math- Math facts
Sushi Monster- Math facts (crowd favorite)
Moose Math- Math facts
Number Rack- Organizing and sorting numbers
Science360- Science videos
PBSkids
PhonicsNinja- work work
PhonicsGenius- Phonics practice

I will be looking for more apps as well to send a long, the students can probably name their favorties from our math app section of the ipads as well!

I have changed my daily office hour from 9:00am-10:00am daily!

Stay healthy and please let your dragonfly know that I miss them SO much!

Hi Families!

Tomorrow we are opening our doors at 8:30 for the first grade market. We hope you can make it! Every item that the first graders have created for you to purchase is 1 dollar. We encourage you to bring one dollar bills instead of coins! We are so excited to have you and we hope you can make it for a little light shopping. Siblings are also welcome! There is more information in my previous post titled "Welcome Back"! All of our money raised will go to support the animals who have been injured or lost their habitat in the Australia fires. We hope to see you there and if not, I will snap a lot of pictures!

Global Play Day🌎

Hi Families!

This coming Wednesday is Global Play Day. We will be participating in the morning of 2/5. We will use this time to play and to continue creating for the market! Students are able to bring in toys from home if they wish! We want to encourage you to only send in toys that require imagination. We will not be using technology. Although our class is very lucky to be participating in this global day, not all of the SMS classrooms are choosing to partake. Many classrooms will be playing in March. We wated to do this on the actual day along with our buddy classes. Students can wear comfortable clothing or pjs if they wish!

Our First Grade Market to save the koalas in Australia is the following day 2/6. We are so excited to have you join us, don't forget to bring your one dollar bills!

Welcome Back!

Hi Families!
I hope you had a great long weekend. It's been so great getting back to school and continuing our learning this morning. The dragonflies have been blowing me away with their deep thinking and risk taking! It is so evident that we are heading into our second half of first grade! We have some very exciting times ahead and I wanted to first give you some reminders for some events in the near future.

Our field trip to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is this Thursday, January 23rd. If you are chaperoning please meet us in Concord at 10:00! If you marked that your child needed a bag lunch on the permission slip form, they are all set! Please pack a lunch for your child if you did not mark that they needed one on the permission slip. We are very excited for this trip and love making memories like this together!

We have a "Save the Koalas" first grade market happening February 6th at 8:30am. This is a time for you to come into our classroom and make purchases (everything is 1 dollar each) of some finely made hand goods- ofcourse created by the dragonflies! We will be donating all that we make in our market to help the Koalas who are trying to survive in fire-ravaged Australia. Last year first graders raised $2,300 for the Georgie Badiel Foundation that helps provide clean water to people in need. We are so excited to give back and make a difference in our world. We would love for you to join us on this day and purchase our goods! Other donations are also welcome!

Report Cards will be coming home this coming Monday. Report cards will look different from last year's and are much more informative! We are excited to launch these report cards electronically and I can't wait to share with you the growth I have seen in all of these amazing learners. As always, when something is new, we are working hard to learn this new system and are very excited to have a new way to report out to you all that is going on in our learning!

I hope your week is off to a great week like ours! 😁

UPCOMING FIELD TRIP

Hi Families

We have a field trip coming up! Just like our previous field trip, please look over the field trip permission slip and send in a payment reflecting if it will be just your child joinging us or if you will be joining us as well as a chaperone! We would love to have you if you can make it but also understand that it is an extremely busy time of year. Our trip is at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center! This permission slip should be returned by this Friday the 10th. Please write an extra little note on the permission slip if you'd like your child to order a bag lunch for that day and I will connect with your child on what they'd like to eat! 😁

Happy 2020!

Hello Families!
I'd first like to thank you informally for the amazing class holiday gift and for making me feel so special this holiday season. It has been the best teaching your little ones and getting to know your families. I have notes for each one of you coming home in blue folders tomorrow. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Tomorrow we will be going outside for our buddy time with the Seals and the Owls! We will be building in the snow so please make sure your dragonfly has their snow gear and boots!

I wanted to post some photos of our days before break! Along with taking on some very sophisticated learning (as you saw at our "Meet the Author") we had so much fun together! I hope you enjoyed seeing all of the work and crafts that were taken home as well! We sure have been busy! I can't wait to get back in the swing of things with these amazing learners tomorrow!
