Newsletter 4-15-16

We had a great week in the Dragonfly class! I Can't believe we have reached the week before April vacation! This year has just flown by! Report cards were sent home in blue folders on Friday. Please send the envelope back to school signed. Here are some pictures from our exciting week!
Reading
In reading we are beginning our Series Book Club Unit. We have spent the week reviewing good habits and reading skills to have in more complex text, like chapter books. We also reviewed how to talk about text with a buddy. The students have also enjoyed reading different poetry books to go along with our new writing unit.
Math
We have been working on measuring and developing good habits for when we measure. We have also worked on creating and reading different types of graphs. It was so fun having our own long jump competition to practice measuring! (I came in 6th, we have some jumpers in our class) We continue to work on subtraction and reading directions very carefully when we compute with word problems.
Writing
We have started working on poetry and the students have LOVED it. We have practiced looking at the world and ordinary objects with a poet's eye. We even went on a nature walk to get inspired for our poems! The students have already written some beautiful poetry and I can't wait to see what they accomplish throughout this unit. We have started putting our finished poems into our new poetry writing notebooks.
Word Work
The students have truly been taking ownership of their weekly sort words. Word work in our classroom is always so fun and the students have been doing so well with their weekly word tests. We are now working on remembering to apply these patterns to our writing! We have been spending some extra time on handwriting during word work time as well.

Newsletter 4-8-16

Greetings 2D Families. We had such a busy week in the dragonfly class last week. Here is a wrap up of all of the excitement. Thank you for coming to the wax museum and for making the day so special. The Dragonflies did such an amazing job and they were so proud of themselves. We were wiped after that morning! This coming Wednesday, April 13th is an early release due to family/teacher conferences. Have a great week and thank you for all that you do!
Reading
The students worked so hard putting together all of our new knowledge we have learned about fairy tales and using it to compare with different stories. The students also enjoyed acting out fairy tales this week and looking at the difference between fairy tales written long ago and the Disney versions. We of course, rehearsed for our wax museum. The Dragonflies took their rehearsal times very seriously.
Writing
We finished up our persuasive writing unit and enjoyed sharing our writing with our peers and trying to convince other second graders and friends to read the books that we have enjoyed so much. We will now enter into our new poetry unit!
Math
We continue to work on graphing, subtraction strategies, word problem strategies, longer number sentences and measuring! The students are working on their skills of measuring and their accuracy. We have been talking about some different units such as inches, centimeters, yards and meters. We will strengthen our knowledge over the next week!
Wax Museum
Our wax museum was a huge success. The students were able to talk about their characters and answer questions that visitors asked. I was blown away by their confidence and their hard work throughout the morning. Thank you for your help with the costumes and making this day special for us. On Thursday we had Father Time and Dot the Fairy come to visit us in our classroom, this was so magical and got us very excited for the wax museum.
