Pirate Play Rehearsal Tomorrow

Hello 2D Families! Tomorrow at 2:05 we have our pirate play rehearsal. We will perform our play for the 1st-3rd grade as our official dress rehearsal before the big show Thursday night! The Dragonflies should bring their pirate costumes to school to change in to for the rehearsals.
Boys- Black shirt, Jean bottoms
Girls- White shirt, Jean bottoms
*I have the purple bandannas ready to go in our classroom!*

Since the actual performance is Thursday night, please have your child just bring their costume to change in to for the dress rehearsal so it is not worn throughout the day! We can't wait for you to see the performance. We have been working so hard! See you Thursday! Arrrr.

Important Update!

Important Permission Slip Update
*I am realizing that some of the permission slips did not have a back page. I am re-sending all permission slips home that were handed in with information and did not have a back page. Please check the back and make sure there is a signature on the slip! We need the signature for your child to attend the field trip. If you there is a blank permission slip in your child's blue folder tonight that means I have not received one for your child yet and this new permission slip has a pack page. I am sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your attention to this!

Have a wonderful evening! :)

Homework & Quick Note 5/23/16

Homework
As the end of the year is approaching, homework will look a little different. There will be no homework packet sent home this week. Students are being asked to look around their yards for different types of plants and sketch them. Students should also be reading and using IXL or Xtra Math for math practice. Mr. G has also set up the Dragonflies with Qwerty Town. This is an online typing program where the students can strengthen their keyboarding skills. To sign in, students need to use their gmail account username (only what is before the @sau16.org) and their gmail password. We have been working so hard to memorize these so your child should know their username and password. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Newsletter 5-20-16

Hi 2D Families! We had a crazy busy week here at SMS. We are so excited to welcome you to our classroom for the Author's Tea, this coming Friday, May 27th. If you or a family member is planning to attend- please email me to let me know! I would like to haves omeone for each child to share their writing with, so I need to plan who to ask within the building!
National Park Day
This week we had our Second Grade National Park Day. It was a huge success. We traveled to the different 2nd grade classrooms to learn about various national parks. We visited Denali, Yellowstone, Acadia, Redwood National Park and of course the Everglades. It was such a great day but I was blown away at the level of research the student did for the Everglades. They created projects that would teach the other second graders about the different animals and plants you will find in the Everglades. It was a great day.
Reading
We have been working on making predictions based on all we know from our series books now. We have also been searching for special language that author's use and noticing when author's compare two things together and what they mean. We have been working on our "talk" during book clubs. We have come so far and we are pushing our friends to dig deeper in their thinking and explain their thoughts. It is truly amazing and these Dragonflies are ready for third grade!
Writing
We have been working on poetry and we look forward to hand picking our pieces of writing to share with you at our Author's Tea. The students love writing time and they have been working so hard to convey a feeling through their writing.
Math
We are still plugging away in math. We continue to work on partitioning and making sure that we are dividing shapes into equal pieces that don't overlap and also take up the entire shape. This is a difficult skill and we are doing much better! We also continue to work on strategies for solving arrays, word problems, and addition/subtraction problems.
Maker Fest and Art Fest
The Maker Fest was a huge success. The students loved looking at the different creations from SMS. We even had some entries from our classroom!
