Newsletter 3-25-16

Happy Spring 2D Families! We had a busy week in the Dragonfly Class. Here is a wrap up of our learning. I look forward to meeting with all of you for conferences within the upcoming two weeks!
Reading
In reading this week we continued to look closely at fairy tales and the bad characters within them. The students are thinking so deeply about how fairy tales are written and what lessons they teach us. We also started working on our life size murals for the Wax Museum! The students have learned techniques when using oil pastels and they have enjoyed making their murals come to life and adding their own style. We have been working on compiling the most important facts about our characters for the wax museum! Please continue to read fairy tales at home!
Writing
We continue to write about our reading and use what we acquire from our reading to convince others  to read it! The students have been adding great voice into their writing and they love sharing their pieces! The students have been very interested in our daily read aloud "The Land of Stories" and have been wanting to convince other second graders to read it with their families or in their classrooms. It has been so great to see the students so invested in their reading that they love to write about it and convince others to become so invested as well!
Math
The students did so well with Unit 6. We worked a lot with word problems and determining whether we need to add or subtract. We also worked a lot with rounding and using what we know about place value to help us solve addition and subtraction problems quicker. This unit gave us the opportunity to work with bar graphs and analyzing data. The students did so well with this and will finish up testing by Monday. We are ready to cruise into Unit 7 and continue strengthening our addition and subtraction skills with larger numbers.
Pysanky
2D had so much fun reading the book "Rechenka's Eggs" by Patricia Polacco. In this book we learned about the Ukrainian art of decorating eggs called Pysanky. We designed our own eggs just as Babushka did in the story and the students worked so well together during this as they shared the colors!
