Newsletter 10/1/16

Our week in 2D started off quite eventful with Johnny Appleseed Day. The students enjoyed their day so much. With an early release and special events like our author visit, we were still able to have a week full of learning and the students did so well on their Unit 1 math test and their weekly word tests! Keep up the studying at home!
Reading
This week we focused a lot on using different strategies to solve a word and making sure we try everything we know before asking for help on a word. The students were so responsible about recording the words they solved and recognizing what strategy they used. We also worked on partnership reading and the skill of retelling.
Writing & Word Work
We continue to work on small moments but will be wrapping up soon and getting our favorite small moment hung in the hallway! We are working so hard on author's craft and handwriting. We will begin writing narratives in the upcoming weeks, using Kevin Henkes books as our guide. The students did so well on their weekly word test and it is clear that they are learning their rules for the week with their sort.
Math
We wrapped up Unit 1 this week and the students did so well. This week we worked on completing number sentences by filling in the missing symbol, even/odd numbers, place value, and completing greater than-less than- or equal to problems. We are excited to learn some new math games with the upcoming unit.
Science
Through exploring magnets we have been working on asking good science questions that promote inquiry. Children are full of wonder and that makes science time so magical. To provide another experience for the students to ask good questions- we explored owl pellets (sterilized of course.) The students came up with great questions and they were amazed at what they were finding. They were discovering what bones matched which animals and helping each other form meaningful questions that we can investigate. Next week we will begin working in our science notebooks and taking part in science talks.
Dragonfly News
We were so lucky to be able to meet Matthew Holm and Jonathan Follett, the authors and illustrators of Marvin and theMoths. They told us that the book took them 12 YEARS to write! The Dragonflies were thinking editing wasn't so bad after all, after hearing that!
I hope you had a great weekend!
