Newsletter 10-9-16

I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend. We had our busiest week yet in 2D and the students worked so hard each and every day. It is amazing how smooth our days have been going- this wonderful group of students work so well together and take pride in trying their best and learning new ideas.
Reading
This week we looked closely at the powerful words that author's choose in their writing. We talked about how these words allow us to make pictures in our minds. The students worked hard at picking these words out in their reading. We noticed that these words often describe settings or characters. The students did a fun activity of sketching a setting from a story just by listening to the descriptive words- they loved it!
Writing
This week be began writing fictional stories inspired by the author Kevin Henkes. The students are loving this! Each student planned their story with a graphic organizer and took time to figure out their beginning, middle and end. The students also planned who their main character was and thought about what type of character they might be. Once the writing began the students continued to work on writing an exciting hook to start their story. The students also worked SO hard to create a setting in their story. The students were so proud of themselves for not finishing their stories in one setting. They are taking time to think and plan like real authors do!
Word Work
The students are becoming so familiar with our word work daily schedule. The students have been learning their word rule, recording their words in their word journal, speed sorting, blind buddy sorting, word hunting and using Spelling City. The students did so well on their word tests and those were sent home in Friday folders. We want students to first use their rule correctly in the word and then work on spelling the word correctly in its entirety.
Math
This week we worked so hard on identifying the important words in a number story which is also known as a word problem. We learned that these words can tell us if the problem is asking us to add or subtract. We did a lot of work with doubles facts this week as well. The more the students study these facts at home- the easier this work will be in the classroom. We used money to count by tens and show different ways to get to 100 buy using ones, fives, tens and twenties. We also worked on the strategies we can use to solve addition problems quicker and accurately.
