Welcome Back! Newsletter 4/22/16

Hello 2D Families! Welcome back from April Vacation! I had an amazing time traveling with family to the Dominican Republic. I hope you had a great week with your families and you are feeling refreshed for the rest of our school year. We had such a busy week before our break so here are some of the highlights.
Wildlife Encounters
We were so lucky to have some visitors early on in the week. Since we are starting our plant unit in science we thought it would be great to meet some animals that contribute to the life of plants. First we met some Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches that eat decaying plants and help make the soil rich compost. Next, we met the Bennett's Wallaby who is an herbivore. She eats the top part of the leaves for nutrients. This animal does not eat the roots because it would destroy the plants. She can also support all of her body weight on her tail! Then we met Noah, a Green Wing McCaw. This bird has a green stripe and flies and transports seeds across the rain forest. His beak is a special tool, just like a nutcracker, because he is always eating walnuts. He is a seed predator and disperser. We also met an albino corn snake, a large cane toad, and a skunk! The students were so excited!
Preparation for the School Garden
2D got the chance to start planting and preparing the seeds for our school garden. We planted sunflowers and tomatoes and the students were able to talk to the amazing volunteers who are helping with the garden. We asked questions about when the food would be ready and if the garden would be protected from animals. We also planted green beans in our little green houses to launch or plant unit. We will see if anything sprouts when we get back from April Vacation!
Google Expeditions
We were so lucky to have members of google come to our school so we could go on a virtual field trip. The students were so respectful of the equipment and we were able to see many of the U.S. Monuments and some volcanoes in Hawaii. The students could use the goggles to look in front, behind, to the sides and below them. This was so exciting and we had so much fun sharing this experience with 2S!
Jump Rope for Heart
The students jump roped for a whole hour at jump rope for heart on Friday afternoon! We had such a great time and the students were showing off their team work skills. We enjoyed popsicles after we worked so hard!
Math
We wrapped up unit 7 in math and spent the week reviewing measurement. We enjoyed some nice weather and went outside to work on our math explorations and then we tested on Friday. The students worked so hard and did so well!
Poetry
The students have been working so hard on their poems. They are all truly incredible poets. As we talk about the more complex components of poems- such as rhyming, line breaks, sound words and sharing an idea, the students have taken each challenge and enjoyed putting them into their poetry writing books. We are so excited to share them with you!

Dragonfly News
Thank you to our mystery reader! We love having you!

The students always want me to hold the Wildlife Encounter animals when they visit, so I took this picture for them in Punta Cana. I knew they would love it!
