Newsletter 5-13-16

I hope you were able to enjoy the nice weather on Saturday! As always we were so busy last week and we are working so hard on some exciting things! We enjoyed the Wellness Walk with our friends and families and we had our first pirate play rehearsal with the entire second grade!
Reading
We have been working so hard on our Series Book Unit. We have been looking at how relationships change in the stories and how the character can have many different relationships with other characters. We have been taking notes about our reading and looking closely at author's craft. We talked a lot about what kind of writing puts a picture in our heads and how the authors do that.
Writing
We are still working on our poetry and we are taking big ideas and making small poems with strong feelings. We have enjoyed sharing our poems with our peers and learning about the different kinds of poems.
Math
We continue to work on partitioning different shapes and learning different attributes of shapes. We have been working so hard to identify shapes and learn new math games. We will wrap up our unit and test this week!
Plants
We have been investigating plants and learning how plants survive best and where plants can surprisingly survive! We have been looking at different plants in our classroom as well.
National Park Tour
We have been researching The Everglades National Park so we can teach the entire second grade about it on May 19th for our national park tour. Each class will be going to the other second grade classrooms to learn about the different national parks. It has been amazing watching the students research their topics and take this project so seriously. They absolutely love it! You will not believe the amazing work we have created in 2D about the Everglades and we are learning SO much!

Important News!
Please make sure to refresh your memory with the important dates I posted last on the blog. I will be posting them again but there are so many to be aware of! We do have an early release on May 19th of this week. The students will be dismissed at 12:50 on that Wednesday! :) The SMS Garden has also made great progress! We were able to step outside and see some of the work Timberland was doing to help create our garden on Friday! It's looking great!
