Newsletter 11/6/15

Thank you to those of you who had conferences this week! It was so great meeting with you and I look forward to keeping the communication strong! We do not have school this coming Wednesday, November 11th due to Veterans Day.
Reading
We have moved into our non-fiction reading unit. We are exploring non fiction books and finding out that we can become experts on topics that interest us. We continue to record our thinking during Reader's Workshop time. As we record our thinking, we are thinking deeply about how we can put it into our own words, instead of copying the author's words.
Writing
We are sailing through our Authors as Mentors unit and it has been so amazing to see how the students are showing off their creativity and passion for writing. Our room is so quiet during writing time, you could hear a pin drop! We are finishing up our title pages and illustrations for our narratives and then we will work to edit and publish them. The students have truly enjoyed this unit and it is evident when you read their stories.
Math
In Unit 3 this week, we have been using dominoes to set up our own addition problems. We continue to review place value because it plays such an important role in how we will set up larger addition problems. We have also been working with fact families, word problems and explaining our thinking.
Science
This week we went on a rock hunt outside and collected rocks of all different kinds. We then discussed what a property was and used this definition to help us describe, classify and sort our rocks. The students have been doing so well with this unit and have asked great questions that we would like to research!
Dragonfly News
Black and white pictures of Stratham are due by Thursday, November 12th for our Community Unit. Thank you to those who have already sent them in! Friday Folders were not sent home this week due to the short week! I have added a few more links to our "favorite websites", including some keyboarding practice- check them out!
