Newsletter 10/9/15

There is no school on Monday due to Columbus Day. Enjoy the long weekend! Thank you for sending back reading logs for the month of September. We had busy nightly readers! I will be posting the newsletters on the blog weekly from now on. I sent home a hard copy newsletter if I did not receive your slip about successfully subscribing to the blog- just to make sure everyone is informed. If you would still like to receive a hard copy newsletter, please let me know and I would be happy to send one home weekly. Homework will still be sent home weekly in homework folders.
Word Study
This week we focused on "short u" and "long u". We wrapped up practicing how to sort our words daily using the Words Their Way program. Starting on Tuesday we will be in our differentiated groups- tackling words that fit our individual reading and writing needs. On Mondays we learn the "rule", on Tuesdays we do a speed sort, on Wednesdays we do a blind buddy sort, on Thursdays we do a speed sort and a word hunt, and on Fridays we have a word test. Please encourage your child to study the weekly word wall words as well. We have a test on these words each Friday. I will also be sending home the same sort your child is working on in school if you would like to practice the sorts at home as well.
Reader's Workshop
Our Reader's Workshop is going really well. We are all done benchmark assessments and are working in small groups for guided reading instruction. Mr. Fosher was even in our room during Reader's Workshop this week and he was so impressed! This week we talked a lot about understanding what we read and taking notes to remember our thoughts. We also worked on reading fluently. Reading Partners were introduced this week as well.
Writer's Workshop
2D is doing an amazing job with Writer's Workshop each day. We are working on wrapping up small moments. This week we talked about adding descriptive words to our writing. We have been taking time to share our writing with others, especially our writing partners!
Math
Everyone did extremely well with wrapping up Unit 1. We are now on Unit 2. So far, we have worked with counting money including one dollar bills, ten dollar bills, and 100 dollar bills. We are now learning how to write our own number stories using pictures and number models. As always, we are still working on math fact fluency daily.
Science
We are scientists! This week we have worked on solving Mystery Samples. Each day we have a different object in a box that can't be open. The scientists have to use their senses to try and figure out what is inside the box- without looking! We record our data and make inferences about what could be inside. The students have loved this!
October News
Please remember to send leaves in for our leaf painting activity. We will begin painting the week of the 19th. We will also be doing pumpkin math Friday, October 30th. I will be asking for you to send your child to school with a small pumpkin as we get closer to the date! We are in need of plastic silverware in our classroom, especially spoons- if you would like to send any in! Thank you for taking the time to  sign up for conferences! Here are some pictures from the week!
