News 10/16/15

Although it was a short week, we sure got a lot done! It is that time of the year where germs start making their way around. We are working very hard in 2D to keep tables washed and our hands clean.
Word Work
We created teams for our word work and our first week of differentiated instruction went well! The team names are the best ever- The Superheroes, The Awesome Unicorns, The Super Sorters, and The Kings. We will continue to solve new sorts each week with our teams.
Math
This week we have worked on tackling new strategies to solve addition problems. Since everyone learns differently, we are working on figuring out which strategies work best for us. The idea is not to use each strategy for each problem but to use the ones that come easily. These are just extra tools to help us! We talked about counting on from the largest number, using tally marks, drawing pictures, using a ten frame (or picturing one), using double facts, turn around facts (2+3= 3+2), combining numbers, using a number line, and using a number grid.
Life Skills
Mrs. Griffith has been coming to our classroom to teach us about treating others with kindness. Last week we watched students our age navigate social situations that we might encounter. We learned news ways to make new friends. This week we learned that not all people communicate in the same ways but that does not make them different. Mrs. Griffith taught us Sign Language and we had to do a scavenger hunt without talking to one another. We could only use sign language or our bodies.
Fire Safety
We were very lucky to have a fire safety talk this week from one of our dads! We talked about how important it is to have a home safety plan made in case of a fire. We were able to ask questions and try on the amazing equipment that fire fighters wear when they are fighting a fire. We still can't believe they have to put all of the equipment on in less than one minute!!! This was such an exciting time in our classroom.
Dragonfly Updates
We were very lucky to welcome back one of our dads from serving our country this week! Our whole class got to take part in the surprise by signing a welcome home sign and we couldn't have been happier. We thank him for his service! Please remember to return leaves by Thursday, October 22nd! I will be posting directions on how to preserve the leaves so they are flexible and not too brittle for our art project. If you have already returned your leaves- no worries, I will take care of them! :)
