Academic Update

Hi Families!
I hope everyone had a great winter break! I'm sure the dragonflies are ready to be back in our learning space- I know I am! It's known that these weeks between winter break and spring break are the most dense curriculum-wise, they are also where students soak up the most knowledge due to our established routine and hard work up to this point! As we come back from winter break the students will be entering all new units that are very exciting- such as money, persuasive writing, plants, and fairytales, folktales and fables. Here's a look back on our latest learning times- everything from feeling the love on Valentine's Day to making ice cream to wrap up our matter unit!
Math
The students worked hard in our measurement unit to estimate lengths and measure them accurately. We used rulers, yard sticks, and tape measures. The students worked with inches and centimeters! We talked about the use of feet and yards as well. The students were able to answer and create math problems using various units of measurement. There was so much adding and subtracting in this unit and we were so glad that our math facts are helping us to add and subtract quicker than we used to! We know that finding the difference between two objects would mean subtracting and that finding the total length of two objects would mean adding. The students recorded data from our measurement unit and learned how to put it into graphs. We also learned how to read different graphs and answer questions related to them. It was a very fun unit and a measurement station was one of the favorites during our Academic Olympics which was a mix of math stations and other fun challenges!
Writing
We have written some pretty impressive lab reports. You will love checking them out at our Author's Tea coming up in the late spring! For Read Across America week we took a little break from our scientific writing to experiment with some fun Dr. Seuss inspired writing. We worked with repetition, interesting characters, and rhyming. The students loved to create writing that would entertain an audience rather than teach; like in our lab reports.
Reading
Our literary and special language unit has come to an end and as a teacher this was such a powerful unit to work through with the students. This unit was not easy, it required very close and careful readers. It also put their comprehension skills to the test.  The students were finding special language left and right, whether it be in playful wording or idioms. Be sure to check out some of their findings in the pictures! They were excited to share their sticky notes with groups and reading partners. It was amazing to hear the students talking about the books they are reading- it really shows how much progress we have made in second grade! As students are starting to notice the special language that authors use to spice up their writing- I am seeing this transfer into their own writing! #proud
Science
After multiple experiments in our own classroom and the other second grades, the dragonflies have become quite the experts on the states of matter! To wrap up our unit, we made homemade ice cream in our classroom, thinking about how the three major states of matter allowed us to do it! The Owl Class joined us in our room and we had to shake our ingredients to create our tasty treat! Most dragonflies loved it but as all experiments go, some did not turn out as well as planned. Good thing we are flexible thinkers!

Dragonfly News:
Information about The Second Grade Wax Museum will be coming home this week. I will also post information to the blog!

Warning: Some of our pictures may be wacky! Read Across America Week had us coming to school in some pretty funny outfits!
