Quick Update 3-18-16

Happy weekend Dragonfly Families! I hope my fabulous learners enjoyed their afternoon and day off this week. Although our week was short, it was very exciting! Here is a quick wrap up of this week and some fun events that happened in our classroom for St. Patrick's Day.
Reading
In reading we are working toward learning more about fairy tales through independent and partner reading. As partners we are directing each other in the roles of characters in order to get the "big picture" view of all the story elements in our books, including the setting and magical elements. We are also getting into the heart of our classroom read aloud story- The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. Every time a chapter ends, the students let out a loud "Nooooo!" They are loving this story and the connection it has to our fairy tale unit. We created a map of the magical world we have just entered in the story and it is going to be a great reference for us as we continue to read and follow these characters on their adventure!
Writing
Opinion writing has been so fun, as we explore writing about our reading. The students are truly taking ownership of their writing and expressing their opinions about characters or situations they are reading about. The students have loved sharing their writing with others.
Math
This week in math, we spent a lot of time talking about rounding and making ballpark estimates. We talked about when we round, we will round to a number with a zero in the ones place. We also talked about rounding to the nearest tens place. We sang a cute little jingle to help us remember! "5 and above, give it a shove! 4 and below, back to zero!"
St. Patrick's Day
We had a surprise visitor come to our classroom and leave glitter everywhere! We then discovered at the end of the day, there had been a tiny little envelope sitting on the easel. Who was it from, you ask? The tiny leprechaun Tater O'Neil! The students were so excited about this and 2D was a fun place to be. We listened to some Irish music and continued with our learning throughout the day!
