Newsletter 3-11-13

Hello 2D Families! I hope you had a great weekend! Here is a wrap up of last week. We had fun exploring and learning together in our classroom together, as always.
Reading
We continue to explore fairy tales and it has been so neat to look closely at our characters and examine the emotions they express and why. We have become experts at getting to know characters and it shows in our partner talks! We are also becoming experts at picking out the elements that make fairy tales unique in the fairy tales that we read! We have started tracing our bodies for our life size poster that will be next to us as we present at the wax museum as well!
Writing
We have been working hard to write persuasively and the students are loving this unit. We are writing persuasively in letter form and the students have loved writing to their favorite characters, their friends and other second grade readers. We are writing about our reading and it is so amazing to see the progress the students have made when expressing their ideas about what they have read.
Science
In science this week we continued experimenting with gas. This week we used the same jar and cork boat with the candle. This week we left the jar uncovered and lit the candle. We discovered that when we added baking powder and vinegar to the water where the candle was floating, this created a chemical reaction! The chemical reaction created bubbles of carbon dioxide that pushed the oxygen out of the jar, causing the flame to go out. The students were so amazed by this and at first, could not believe that the candle went out even though the jar was not covered by anything! This experiment was so exciting for the students.
Word Work
We have had another successful week of word work and continue to work through our centers of writing, sorting, Spelling City, and daily word jobs to help us become masters at these words and the rules that link them all together! I am so proud of their hard work during this time each day!
Math
We are focusing on word problems with subtraction and finding the difference. We have done a lot of word problems with measurement. We also started creating our own word problems with silly animal stories. The students are doing a nice job including the unit of the problem in their answers!
Dragonfly News
We had so much fun with our mystery reader this week! Thank you for coming!
