The Dragonflies are Givers!

Greetings! The 2D Classroom Family has decided that we would like to help others during this holiday season. As a class we came up with different charities that help the people around us. We talked about how kids just like us, may be in need of help to pay for medicine or care that they need, toys or food. We held a class vote and 2D has decided they would like to donate to The Make a Wish Foundation. This foundation helps provide children who are sick with a joyful experience they might not otherwise have.
How are we going to do this? We have decided that on Friday the 18th of December we would have a Pajama Day. Students can pay $1.00(or any donation-less or more) or make a card to donate, if they would like to participate. We will also be having a "2D Has Talent Show" that afternoon, where students can pay $1.00(or any donation- less or more) or make a card, to showcase their talent or share something special with the class. The students are very excited about this and love the idea of helping out other children in need! Families are welcome to come in for the talent show and you are more than welcome to donate or make family cards as well!

Newsletter 12/4/15

Hello 2D families! I hope you have had a nice first week of December. We had a very productive week and it is nice to be back in the swing of things! I will be posting soon about the exact time and date of our gingerbread decorating festivities. Our room parent may also be contacting you about supplies that would be helpful!
Reading
We celebrated being experts at nonfiction and the students were so excited about all of their new knowledge that they wanted to teach others! We now have amazing informational fact posters hanging outside of our classroom to show off how much we learned! The students loved sharing these with the class. We have entered our series book unit. We are working hard to understand our characters as people. We have talked about getting to know our characters and understanding that it takes time. We are looking closely at their actions and why they might do certain things. It has been so neat realizing that many of our books are part of a series and we can truly get to know our characters as we follow them through their different adventures!
Writing & Science
Writing and Science are going to be intertwined during the month of December and partly through January. We have been talking a lot about how scientists can ask a question about the world and then hypothesize what they think will happen. With this type of thinking and questioning comes experimenting and lab reports! Everyone is so excited to begin learning how to write lab reports. We have talked about how high schoolers do this- and that is pretty cool! Our unit of study will be on states of matter. We will use our questions about states of matter to guide our experiments and we will then write lab reports with the essential parts.
Math
This week we have worked so hard on telling time. We learned a fun new game to help us. We have worked on telling time to the minute and what "half past", "quarter past", and "quarter of" look like on the clock. Since digital clocks are so common in our lives, if you have a standard clock, please practice telling time with your child because it truly takes practice! We will continue to practice telling time in our classroom and will also be focusing on place value this coming week!

Quick Note 12/2/15

Happy December! This is just a reminder that our class will be purchasing books at the book fair tomorrow, December 3rd at 10:05. If you would like to join us for the book fair, just check in with the front office and meet us there! :)

Homework packets were longer than usual this week! If you are up for the challenge then wonderful, but please don't feel stressed to complete it all! It is always great to review and practice math skills but family time comes first!

Wild Life Encounters
We had a great last day before our mini-break! Wild Life Encounters came and gave us an incredible experience this morning. We saw a large member of the lizard family named Monster, a member of the bird family named Sid, a Patagonian Cavy (from the rodent family) named Nibbles, a Flemish Giant Bunny, and a Boa Constrictor! We learned the difference between a plant eater and a hunter. Did you know..."Eyes in the front, ready to hunt! Eyes on the side, I like to hide." We learned so many interesting facts, like Nibbles can run 40mph, and that snakes have no feelings- they live purely by instinct! We got to touch the animals before we left, 2D was very brave!
Stratham Post Office
We had a great visit from postal workers from the Stratham Post Office. We were able to ask questions relating to the post office and the community. It was so interesting to hear about the day of a postal worker and how mail travels around our country and the world. We even found out that some odd things can be mailed!
