Newsletter 12/4/15

Hello 2D families! I hope you have had a nice first week of December. We had a very productive week and it is nice to be back in the swing of things! I will be posting soon about the exact time and date of our gingerbread decorating festivities. Our room parent may also be contacting you about supplies that would be helpful!
Reading
We celebrated being experts at nonfiction and the students were so excited about all of their new knowledge that they wanted to teach others! We now have amazing informational fact posters hanging outside of our classroom to show off how much we learned! The students loved sharing these with the class. We have entered our series book unit. We are working hard to understand our characters as people. We have talked about getting to know our characters and understanding that it takes time. We are looking closely at their actions and why they might do certain things. It has been so neat realizing that many of our books are part of a series and we can truly get to know our characters as we follow them through their different adventures!
Writing & Science
Writing and Science are going to be intertwined during the month of December and partly through January. We have been talking a lot about how scientists can ask a question about the world and then hypothesize what they think will happen. With this type of thinking and questioning comes experimenting and lab reports! Everyone is so excited to begin learning how to write lab reports. We have talked about how high schoolers do this- and that is pretty cool! Our unit of study will be on states of matter. We will use our questions about states of matter to guide our experiments and we will then write lab reports with the essential parts.
Math
This week we have worked so hard on telling time. We learned a fun new game to help us. We have worked on telling time to the minute and what "half past", "quarter past", and "quarter of" look like on the clock. Since digital clocks are so common in our lives, if you have a standard clock, please practice telling time with your child because it truly takes practice! We will continue to practice telling time in our classroom and will also be focusing on place value this coming week!
Dragonfly News
It was so nice seeing many of you at the Scholastic Book Fair this week and at the Santa Pancake Breakfast! Xtra Math information sheets were sent home in Blue Folders on Thursday. If you are looking for an extra challenge or just some fun extra practice for math, it is a great resource!
