Newsletter!

Hello Families!
We had a great week in 2D! We are getting to know each other more and more each day. We dove right into our curriculum this week and the students worked so hard all week long. It's been fun working together and building friendships that will last us all year long.
Math
In math this week we used number grids to help us solve number sentences. We talked about how the number 10 helps us in many ways as a mathematician. We counted by tens, used our number grids to hop by tens, and built ten to help us solve number models with three addends. The students worked so hard and started using these strategies right away. This unit is all about fact practice and becoming more fluent when solving our facts. We talked about fact families and how numbers work together even when you rearrange their order.
Reading
This week we talked about reading "just right" books and how to shop for them! We talked about the book shopping expectations in our classroom and when it is a good time to book shop. After our book bins were full with "just right" books, we began talking about our reading stamina, how we read books, and figuring our how books want to be read. Our reading time is already SO magical. Would you be shocked if I told you our classroom reading stamina reaches 35 minutes as of now?! That is incredible for just starting Reader's Workshop! Our first session of reading buddies was this week and it was so fun being the older buddy for the first time!
Writing
I would say writing seems to be the favorite time of our day for these learners. We have been writing for 35 minutes during each writing time! The students have been so excited to share their writing and ideas and it has made for an exciting start for our writing unit. We have been working on the basics of writing, such as writing on the lines, using punctuation, including spaces, starting sentences with uppercase letters, and sticking to one topic. The students have loved writing and I am so excited to see where we go with writing in the future! Next stop: personal narratives!
Word Work
We have been working on short a and short i sounds. We have been recognizing spelling patterns and practicing these sounds in our reading and working to transfer them to writing. Along with reviewing these short vowels, we have been learning and practices some word work games that we will use throughout our year. The students are doing so well with this work!
Science
We have been meeting, collaborating, planning, and building with our science buddies. It has been so amazing watching how the communication between the students is already transforming. We are becoming such collaborative and out of the box thinkers. The students have been guiding our work with their interests and their ideas and we have some pretty cool inventions coming your way! We have also started science talks and discussing what it means to be a scientist and how this relates to our world.

Upcoming Events:
