Academic Update

Hello Everyone!
This week in our classroom was energetic, inquisitive, and challenging! The students are definitely excited about our brand new units and they are taking on challenges with a growth mindset and positive energy! I found myself totally bummed to miss the few hours from our delayed openings but we were still able to get through our work! Just a friendly reminder to relook at our classroom allergy list and be mindful of what you send in for snacks! If you need a new notice sent home, please let me know and I can happily get you one! Information for our wax museum will be coming home this week! Students will be choosing a person who has made a change in the world!
Math
We are focusing on arrays and equal groups right now in math. Students are looking at equal groups and learning new termanology that leads to multiplication. They are learning how to read arrays and how to create them. Once students were comfortable with reading arrays they then showed it in a number sentence using repeated addition. From repeated additon, we then show that number sentence in a multiplication sentence. Next we we will use these skills to work through word problems.
Reading
We have officially ended our character study unit! The students had a fun soiree where they used everything they learned and their prediction skills to act like their characters during numerous activities. We now enter a new unit focusing on good reading habits and literary language!
Writing
We are in a fictional writing unit but our main focus lately has been to write in complete sentences that make sense to our readers. We have also been focusing a lot on handwriting- I think you will be impressed when you see our hard work. Word work continues to be a challenge when transfreing it to our writing, each week we focus on writing the words from the sorts we work through into our writing correctly.
Science & Social Studies
We have been studying cause and effect throughout many subject areas. We launched this work in science looking at some wonders in our world. We realized that cause and effect happens all around us and we are the cause for some changes in our world too. We made oobleck to see this more clearly and we will continue to do science experiments that link to a study of states of matter as well. This week, we will look at people in our world who have made great changes. We will call these people change makers. Through a study of biographies, we will get our minds working and exploring as we discover who we want to research and become for our wax museum.
